While Oculus understandably focused on more consumer-friendly additions with its recent v31 software update - namely multiplayer management and the way it handles passwords - something else caught our attention entirely: Mixed Reality with Passthrough.
We've long dreamed of an HMD that's usable for both VR and MR/AR. Combined with its consumer-friendly price point, could Oculus Quest 2 become the one headset to rule them all?
With the production version of Passthrough API targeted for later this year, we might be getting ahead of ourselves a little, but this Experimental addition gives developers the chance to build and test apps that seamlessly blend the real and virtual worlds and open up new possibilities for mixed reality experiences right now.
As well as its potential for games, Oculus also suggests use cases for productivity and co-located Social Presence - hanging out with your friends in a blended real and virtual experience.
