Facebook launches a $10 million creator fund for Horizon Worlds

Facebook's Horizon social VR app may have seemed MIA of late, but new information from the Oculus parent company today aims to redress the balance.

Facebook has launched a $10 million creator fund to encourage more people to build social experiences under a 'new' Horizon Worlds brand. There are three main pillars to the fund.

  1. Community competitions will start later this year, to reward people building the very best worlds in Horizon taking advantage of the tools we offer. Winners will receive up to $10,000 in cash prizes.
  2. The Creator Accelerator Program continues; an application-based initiative designed to give people from diverse backgrounds a crash course in Horizon Worlds creation. The expanded program kicks off early next year.
  3. Finally, Funding For Developers is an opportunity to work with Facebook to create themed experiences - find out more about upcoming themes here.

The invitation-only Horizon beta has seen tools develop in response to feedback from creators over the past year, with new UI and scripting updates to facilitate easier implementation of concepts. More tools will be added, along with game templates and an educational hub.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of the reveal of Facebook's $50m XR Programs and Research Fund as we covered just a week ago.

Developers can sign up to be notified when the Horizon Worlds opportunities open here.
