Facebook-owned VR hardware developer Oculus has revealed the price of its Rift VR kit, which is currently available for pre-orderat the cost of $599, plus tax and shipping.
The kit comes with the headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, an Xbox One controller, all the necessary cables, and two games in the form of EVE: Valkyrie, a space combat sim, and Lucky's Tale, a cartoonish platformer.
Selling fast
Pre-orders were expected to ship in March 2016, but VRFocus is reporting that the day-one kits sold out in the first 14 minutes of pre-orders being live.
Anyone ordering now will have to wait until April 2016.
The news has already caused a stir on the internet, with many claiming the price is far too high for a peripheral which, at the moment, has no major games to back it up, and requires a high-end PC to run.
The price isn't entirely unexpected, however.
Palmer Luckey, the Oculus Rift's creator, stated in September 2015 that VR is a "pretty expensive, relatively primitive proof of concept."
