Virtual reality app store WeArVR hits 150,000 downloads

Virtual reality app store WeArVR hits 150,000 downloads

Oculus isn't the only online outlet for virtual reality games and apps,

Since July 2014, WeArVR has played host to a range of VR software, and is now celebrating delivery of over 150,000 downloads to eager early adopters.

It's also revealed figures and data beyond the number of downloads it's been seeing, and adding new genres to its list of available virtual reality apps, including those currently engaged in crowdfunding campaigns.

Virtual Sunday

According to figures collected by WeArVR, Sunday is the biggest day of the week for escaping from reality.

Indeed, it was a Sunday when VR game Couch Knights racked up almost 3,000 installs and took WeArVR to its new milestone of 150,000 downloads.

"The high number of downloads is fantastic news and a testament of the enthusiasm people have for virtual reality," says WeArVR co-founder Nic Mitham.

"We’re also pleased by the positive response we’ve had from users, with the majority of new users hearing about WeArVR by word of mouth through online forums and sites like Reddit."

The site offers games and apps for a host of different VR devices, from Oculus Rift to Gear VR and Durovis Dive to Google Cardboard.

"As well as hosting virtual reality games we also provide links to games and applications available on other sites," Mitham explains.

"So far we’ve referred more than 20,000 visitors to other virtual reality sites, which is great news for the virtual reality industry as a whole, especially as many of the developers are hobbyists and small teams in need of exposure."

More to come

With over 100,000 Oculus Rift devkits already in circulation, WeArVR says it's already seeing a surge in popularity across all available platforms and all genres of games and apps.

"[This year] we will also brace ourselves for the wave of new headsets and virtual reality experiences that we expect to make 2015 the year of VR," Mitham concludes.

"We’re expecting growth rates to escalate and estimate that we should reach over one million downloads by the middle of the year."
