Magic Leap Partners The NBA

Magic Leap has announced its first sports partnership, with the NBA. The intent is to provide the next generation of sports viewing and interactivity through Magic Leap One and a newly created NBA App that will be available through the platform.

Using Magic Leap’s Screens platform, fans will be able to summon multiple virtual screens into their field of view. When paired with Digital Lightfield technology and spatial computing, these screens can be shown at any size and in any location, combined with supplemental graphics that allow fans to enjoy their favourite stats, replays and commentary, all without missing the game action.

At launch, users will be able to access a curated list of archived NBA games from recent seasons, as well as a selection of highlight clips, with work underway on live NBA games. Magic Leap has also used volumetric capture to bring a life-size Shaquille O’Neal presence into the living room.

Magic Leap is also seeking new use cases for its Screens technology and invites developers and creators of all backgrounds to contact them at [email protected].

You can watch Magic Leap CEO, Rony Abovitz, and NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, discuss the partnership in an onstage interview at Recode’s Code Media conference:
