Two minigame compilations in the top three? Have we lost our minds? Well, no - this is the next project from Make Real, the British studio behind whimsical social VR game, Loco Dojo.
With an impressive track record of top quality VR games and client work, Pastimes for Pirates is every bit as slick as you might expect. Ultimately intended for 6DoF, the build entered into the Indie Pitch was 3DoF - the developers had no intention to show off such an early ‘internal’ work-in-progress, but we bet they’re glad they threw their hat in the ring now that they’ve walked away with the bronze gong!
There may have been just two minigames on offer, but the world already feels well-realised, with a distinct art style and a lot of playful research into potential games in evidence. We’re told that various pirate-themed pub games are in the works, including skittles, shuffleboard and… karaoke!
For the Indie Pitch, we were treated to a surprisingly challenging game of two-player ‘Darrrts!’ that had us longing for more time to dial in our arrow hands. While one player aims for the bull, the other has two shots with a flintlock - do you shoot the dartboard that’s mounted on a ship’s wheel to spin it, or aim for the monkey that’s running loose in the cabin?
The build we tried was running on Samsung Gear VR, with versions planned for Oculus Go and Google Daydream. Pastimes for Pirates should be out by the end of the year for around £9.99.
Judge’s Corner
“Pastimes For Pirates certainly needs further development, but already shows great potential for a simple yet very fun and addictive experience.” Juan Tamargo
“Another great title from this developer with an interesting fantasy at the core of the game, together with fun ideas to socialise in VR. Not too many users have even one headset, not to mention two, but that might change soon with prices dropping and new standalone headsets on their way.” Adam Robaszyński-Janiec
