PocketGamer.biz Website Editor
Journalist / Editor / Writer - Digital / Web / Media - , United Kingdom
|Job Title||PocketGamer.biz Website Editor|
PocketGamer.biz is the leading mobile games industry b2b portal. It covers the mobile (iOS and Android etc) and handheld (Switch etc) games industry and is Steel Media’s flagship .biz site. It is the engine that drives the Mobile Games Awards, the Top 50 Mobile Game Makers list, and other activities including the Pocket Gamer Connects series of events and various mobile summits and mixers.
The site is updated daily with news, features, interviews, profiles, event listings, job news and other timely and regular editorial pieces that support and inform the games industry.
Its mission is to be an essential resource for people working in the mobile and handheld games scene at every level, from student developers to the CEOs of ad networks and everybody in between. The team constantly asks itself what utility it provides the industry, and what it can do to report on and connect the mobile games ecosystem.
This is a full-time, work-from-home, editorial team leader position at Steel Media Ltd. Please note this is a website editorial role and not a video editing role. It's suitable for those with a written journalism background and not video editors. The job can be performed from home and so a London/Bath location is not essential, we will consider candidates from anywhere.
The purpose of this role is to manage, edit, commission and produce content for the leading mobile b2b editorial brand at Steel Media. As well as the daily content of PocketGamer.biz, the role involves overseeing and contributing to brand extensions like the Top 50 list booklets and Mobile Games Awards ceremonies as well as events like Pocket Gamer Connects. It is a varied and creative role that demands the successful candidate be a manager and an ambassador as well as a content creator.
The editor of PocketGamer.biz is a role that will be directly responsible for producing and commissioning daily content – such as news, interviews and features – for PocketGamer.biz, and also taking a holistic interest in all of Steel Media’s b2b output. You’ll be required to work with the managers and other team members to devise and implement the content strategy for the .biz site, and support associated activities. Primarily, you will run the team that maintains and grows the site's traffic and community. You'll be responsible for its status in the tech and games industry. You’ll organise the team so that daily content targets are hit. You’ll also be responsible for planning and executing additional content (for instance, Top 50 Game Maker write-ups) as needed, site regulars and other brand extensions. As a figurehead for the website you will take a prominent role in events like the Pocket Gamer Connects conferences and be prepared to be on stage (or in front of camera) as a spokesperson for the company and the industry. You’ll also work closely with the rest of the editorial and sales teams to share ads opportunities.
The PocketGamer.biz site editor role sits under the b2b side of Steel Media's business, alongside the editors of BlockchainGamer.biz and PCGamesInsider.biz, reporting directly to the senior management team. This role also contributes to our events, Pocket Gamer Connects conferences and other related live activities. It is an adjacent role to the b2c editors, such the editor of PocketGamer.com and you will expected to maintain communication with them to ensure joined-up thinking and support across the company.
This is a fascinating time to be joining as this person will help shape the activities of the company in how we cover mobile going forward. There are internal and freelance team members to manage, and developing the team to get the best out of them is a key part of the role, as is working with other parts of the company to assure an efficient approach to editorial, events, sales, marketing.
You will work remotely, usually from your own home, and therefore a London or Bath location is not essential. But it is valuable that you have easy access to transport centres such as an airport, because when the world unlocks again you will be expected to represent Steel Media Ltd at relevant events. During a typical year, travel to and from events is important, and you should have a valid passport. During such times, it may be necessary to work or travel outside of standard working hours.
Summary of responsibilities
The role would naturally evolve with market trends and any changes in the company, and as an editorial manager you will need to be flexible, but the initial focus would be items like this:
The ideal candidate
We’re looking for an experienced website editor - ideally at least one year of experience of running and commissioning a website, and three years of working in editorial in total - who can demonstrate that they are a safe pair of hands to lead this site into its next chapter.
The editor needs to be organised, dependable, personable and have a level head, especially when on deadline. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated personality who enjoys getting under the skin of the industry, and getting the most out of their team. It's an ideal role for someone looking to further their career in the games and tech industries and who fundamentally understands the differences between the key players across all sides of the industry – from publishers/developers, advertising networks, influencers, middle-ware, mobile technologies and so on.
You’ll have a keen interest in games and new technologies and be hungry to find out more about mobile, particularly about how mobile games are made and monetised. You'll be a great writer and editor, able to convey complicated ideas in a clear and lively fashion. You’ll have an editorial background in journalism (ideally with b2b experience), and are hungry for more responsibility or to take on a bigger site. You’ll need a good eye for what sort of editorial is of most utility to a growing industry. You'll be a great writer, and you’ll need to be an expert at managing deadlines, priorities and other people.
Plus you’ll benefit from a positive, entrepreneurial attitude. You’ll be a gamer; an early adopter; you’ll enjoy getting the best out of people; you’ll be good at spotting creative and commercial opportunities wherever they arise. You will be interested in the brand, the team, and the company, and be capable of putting their needs first.
Steel Media is a small company where the teams work on a number of projects simultaneously; decisions are made quickly, and no two days are the same. So you’ll need to be good at working independently when needed, and respond to the wider needs of the senior managers as they arise. You need to manage multiple communications channels daily, via email, Skype, Zoom and Google Docs and not be fazed by this. Due to working remotely, you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and report to your line-manager via Skype and other online systems regularly.
