It’s aimed at professionals who work in the digital entertainment industries but it has more “prosumer” appeal than many of our other b2b sites. The role

This is a full-time, work-from-home, editorial team leader position at Steel Media Ltd. Please note this is a website editorial role and not a video editing role. It's suitable for those with a written journalism background and not video editors. The job can be performed from home and so a London/Bath location is not essential, we will consider candidates from anywhere.

The purpose of this role is to manage, edit, commission and produce content for the newest editorial brand at Steel Media. The site is new, and is dedicated to an exciting space in the games/entertainment world, so this is a great chance to be joining – you’ll shape not only this new brand, but also how the industry views transmedia and the metaverse.

The editor is a role directly responsible for planning, producing, commissioning (and often writing) daily content – such as news, interviews and features. The editor also works with the senior management on the strategy for the site and takes a holistic interest in the site’s direction and status. You’ll work with other managers and editors here to devise and implement the content strategy for the .biz site, and support associated activities, like events. Primarily, you will run the team that maintains and grows the site's traffic and community. You'll be responsible for its perception in the tech and games industry. You’ll organise the freelancers so that daily content targets are hit. You’ll also be responsible for planning and executing additional content (for instance, Top 50 Game Maker write-ups) as needed, site regulars and other brand extensions. As a figurehead for the website you will take a prominent role in events like the Beyond Games conferences and be prepared to be on stage (or in front of camera) as a spokesperson for the company and the industry. You’ll also work closely with the rest of the editorial and sales teams to share ads opportunities, and be invested in the growth of all Steel Media’s b2b channels.

The site editor role sits under the b2b side of Steel Media's business, alongside the editors of,, and, reporting directly to the senior management team. This role also contributes to our events, Pocket Gamer Connects and Beyond Games conferences and other related live activities. You will expected to maintain communication with all teams – including our b2c branch – to ensure joined-up thinking and support across the company.

This is a fascinating time to be joining as this person will help shape the activities of the company in how we cover the hottest tech and cultural topics going forward. There will be a small team of freelancers to manage, and developing the team to get the best out of them is a key part of the role, as is working with other parts of the company to assure an efficient approach to editorial, events, sales, marketing.

You will work remotely, usually from your own home, and therefore a London or Bath location is not essential. But it is valuable that you have easy access to transport centres such as an airport, because when the world unlocks again you will be expected to represent Steel Media Ltd at relevant events. During a typical year, travel to and from events is important, and you should have a valid passport. During such times, it may be necessary to work or travel outside of standard working hours.

Summary of responsibilities

The role would naturally evolve with market trends and any changes in the company, and as an editorial manager you will need to be flexible, but the initial focus would be items like this:

You will plan, direct, manage, edit and promote the site’s editorial output with their help, to a level defined by the senior managers.
• You will consider data and insight from Google Analytics and elsewhere in order to devise editorial strategy, in order to increase readership. You will take an active interest in site traffic numbers and respond accordingly. SEO will be something you think about daily.

• You will manage and liaise with other members of your team on a daily basis, and manage internal/freelance output within a fixed budget.
• You will host daily meetings with your team members and essential freelancers to ensure team unity and efficient working.
• Oversee and grow regular parts of the site, ensuring core content continues. You will make sure that regular parts of the site, like Virtual Visionaries for instance, are maintained and updated.
• You will work with the ad team to deliver paid content within Steel Media's editorial guidelines. You will support new commercial opportunities; liaising with the CEO and head of sales on advertising/sponsorship opportunities, and feeding back leads/suggestions where possible. With the help of relevant staff members and with freelance support as needed, you will execute sponsored content and other commercial activity as it relates to your site.
• You will attend agreed industry events, and engage with the industry as well as developer and reader communities. You will be the brand’s ambassador, representing us at events and conferences and growing our contacts list and industry influence, and report from them where appropriate, as directed by the senior management.
• All Steel Media employees and contracted staff are expected to promote the brands or activities of Steel Media, positively, in both online and in day-to-day activities eg. If attending an event for the company, or actively using social media.

You may also be required to write content to support the marketing of any of Steel Media's events (relating to the content that would appear in emailers, on the various PG Connects sites or social channels) and host panels, podcasts etc.
• Actively contribute to conversations intended to improve the Beyond Games and other events, strengthen links between the website and the event, and involve yourself in suggesting and sourcing speakers/companies (as well as promote them). The events like Beyond Games and Pocket Gamer Connects are a core part of Steel Media’s business and represent the “live” version of your site and the team will look to you to embrace and promote them.
• Actively engage in pitching and planning new projects: Top 50s, Awards and other activations. You’ll bring ideas to meetings for ways that can grow. You will help originate and champion editorial improvements to the brand, and contribute ideas across the whole company.
• Support Steel Media’s other .biz site editors where needed and work with the directors on strategy for the whole b2b division, including contributing editorial and events ideas. All our editors work closely together to make sure that all our sites are covered in the event of illness of holiday, and you will play a role in that, having regular calls with them, connecting with them for help when you need it and likewise rendering assistance across the whole company if you can.

The ideal candidate

We’re looking for an experienced website editor – ideally at least one year of experience of running and commissioning a website, and three years of working in editorial minimum – who can demonstrate that they are a safe pair of hands to lead this site into its next chapter.

The editor needs to be organised, dependable, personable and have a level head, especially when devising strategy. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated personality who enjoys getting under the skin of the industry, and getting the most out of their team. It's an ideal role for someone looking to further their career in the games and tech industries and who fundamentally understands the value of b2b media – and most importantly, somebody who gets what Beyond Games is trying to achieve. You’ll unironically like the idea of exploring transmedia and metaverse topics, have an interest in new technology, and appreciate the intersection of other creative industries with games.

You’ll have a keen interest in new technologies and be hungry to find out more about up and coming sectors, even ones that traditional media outlets shun, like blockchain. You'll be a great writer and editor, able to convey complicated ideas in a clear and lively fashion. You’ll have an editorial background in journalism (ideally with b2b experience), and are hungry for more responsibility or to take on a fresh site. You’ll need a good eye for what sort of editorial is of most utility to a growing industry. You'll be a great writer, and you’ll need to be an expert at managing deadlines, priorities and other people.

Plus you’ll benefit from a positive, entrepreneurial attitude. You’ll be a gamer; a film/music/sport/art/culture fan; an early adopter; you’ll enjoy getting the best out of people; you’ll be good at spotting creative and commercial opportunities wherever they arise. You will be fundamentally invested in the brand, the team, the company, and the industry.

Steel Media is a small company where the teams work on a number of projects simultaneously; decisions are made quickly, and no two days are the same. So you’ll need to be good at working independently when needed, and respond to the wider needs of the senior managers as they arise. You need to manage multiple communications channels daily, via email, Skype, Zoom and Google Docs and not be fazed by this. Due to working remotely, you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and report to your line-manager via Skype and other online systems regularly.

Specific Requirements

• At least 3 years’ editorial experience (games/tech/b2b industry), at least one of them as a site editor.
• Proven track record in managing/commissioning online content.
• Valid passport, no special visa or travel restrictions.
• Able to work home-based (with a very stable internet connection)
• Willingness to travel and represent the company at conferences sometimes.
• A wide interest in games, technology and digital entertainment.
