PocketGamer.com Special Projects Editor
Journalist / Editor / Writer - Digital / Web / Media - , (Not Specified)
|Job Title||PocketGamer.com Special Projects Editor|
PocketGamer.com is the longest-running and most well-known mobile games site in the world. It covers the mobile (iOS and Android etc) and handheld (Switch etc) games sector and is Steel Media’s flagship consumer site. It is the engine that drives the Pocket Gamer Awards, the LaunchPad video series, and other activities.
The site is updated daily with news, features, tips, guides and reviews. It has a number of sub-sections covering all aspects of the mobile gaming hobby. And it has a network of supporting sibling sites including 148Apps.com and AppSpy.com.
We are seeking at least one potential freelance mid-level/section editor. The person needs to be a capable writer but also somebody who can organise a section on the site, edit and plan the copy coming from other writers, and liaise comfortably with senior staff, external sponsors and other facets of the publishing business, to ensure a timely flow of good content.
Summary of responsibilities
The role would naturally evolve with market trends and any changes in the company, and as an editorial manager you would need to be flexible, but the initial focus would be items like this:
The ideal candidate
First and foremost: you will love writing about games! This could be a great next step for a writer who is looking to take on a little more responsibility and manage a section of site and/or additional special editorial/content projects.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic website writer and section editor - ideally at least one year of experience of writing for and even commissioning a website, and three years of working in editorial in total - who can demonstrate that they are a safe pair of hands to take over parts of a leading website. We have a number of projects on the horizon and the managing editor of the site needs somebody they can depend on to get parts of it done.
The special projects editor needs to be organised, dependable, personable and have a level head, especially when on deadline. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated personality who enjoys finding out more about top games and communicating that to others. It’s unlikely to be a 9-5 role and could fit around your other freelance activities.
You’ll have a keen interest in mobile and handheld games and be hungry to find out more about them and the industry which makes them. You'll be a great writer and editor, able to convey complicated ideas in a clear and lively fashion. You’ll have an editorial background in journalism (with b2c writing experience), and are hungry for more responsibility. You’ll understand the commercial realities of working on sponsored and promoted content too, so a positive, entrepreneurial attitude is a must. You’ll be a gamer; an early adopter; you’ll enjoy getting the best out of people.
Steel Media is a small company where the teams work on a number of projects simultaneously; decisions are made quickly, and no two days are the same. So you’ll need to be good at working independently when needed, and respond to the wider needs of the senior managers as they arise. You need to manage multiple communications channels daily, via email, Slack, Skype, Zoom and Google Docs and not be fazed by this. Due to working remotely, you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and report to the team via online systems regularly.
