Job Title Editor of
Job Description

The purpose of this role is to edit, commission and produce content for b2b editorial site, which covers the phenomenon of blockchain tech and its impact on the world of computer and video games.

You will help maintain and grow the site's traffic and community. You'll be responsible for its status in the tech and games industry, as well as for working closely with the rest of the editorial and sales teams to pass on ads opportunities. The site editor role sits under the b2b side of Steel Media's business, alongside the editors of and, reporting directly to the COO. This role also contributes to our events, Blockchain Gamer Connects and Pocket Gamer Connects conferences and other related live activities. This is a full-time freelance role where you’d be required to work with the managers and other team members to devise and implement the content strategy for the site, and support associated activities (more info below). This is a fascinating time to be joining as this person will help shape the activities of the company in how we cover blockchain going forward.

You will work remotely, usually from your own home, and therefore a London location is not essential.

Content creation

To begin with, you will be responsible for the majority of the site's expert content, but progressively this may evolve into running an editorial budget of freelancers/staff as agreed with your manager. Content will need to be planned and created to hit daily targets. You will write the major proportion of it yourself for now, but adding columnists/editor-at-large/freelancers is possible, which you will then be expected to plan, direct, manage, edit and promote.

You will also oversee the social media channels that support

Brand ambassador at events

You will be an ambassador for our blockchain brand and for Steel Media, representing us at events and conferences and growing our contacts list and industry influence, and report from them where appropriate.

Plan and supporting events

You will help plan and manage blockchain events, including small-scale mixers and large-scale international conferences, as directed by the COO and with assistance from the Steel Media events team. This could involve helping co-ordinate tracks, speakers (selecting, contacting and liaising) and content. You may also be required to write content to support the marketing of any of Steel Media's events (relating to the content that would appear in emailers, on the Blockchain/PG Connects sites or social channels).

Liaise with the sales team and wider business

You will be required to work closely with the sales team to support the monetisation of the site and activities. Also, you will liaise with other departments within the company to ensure the blockchain site is joined up with the strategies of our other sites and events.

The role could naturally evolve with market trends and any changes in the company, but the initial focus would be:

  • To write, plan, commission, and edit content for, to a level defined by your line manager
  • To manage freelance input within a fixed budget.
  • To consider reader feedback, internal data, and insight from Google Analytics and elsewhere in order to devise the editorial strategy.
  • To identify potential technical and editorial improvements to
  • To promote and represent the site to a high professional standard in all communications.
  • To stay abreast of developments in the blockchain gaming sector, and respond strategically with content ideas for
  • To work with the ad team to deliver paid content within Steel Media's editorial guidelines.
  • To attend events, which may be overseas, and engage with the developer and reader communities in person, as agreed with your line manager.
  • To envisage and participate in initiatives such as podcasts, newsletters, videos and other activities as opportunities arise.
  • To identify, manage and create social media opportunities to grow and engage the reader community.

This role requires an outgoing, high energy, self-motivated personality, someone who enjoys meeting new people and getting under the skin of the industry. It's an ideal role for someone looking to further their career in the games and tech industries and who fundamentally understands the differences between the key players across all sides of the industry – from publishers/developers, advertising networks, QA houses, middle-ware, mobile technologies and so on.

You’ll have a keen interest in new technologies and be hungry to find out more about blockchain.

You'll be a great writer and editor, able to convey complicated ideas in a clear and lively fashion. You’ll have an editorial background in journalism (ideally with b2b experience), likely as a section editor or deputy editor, and are hungry for more responsibility. An interest in games and tech is a must, as is a good eye for what sort of editorial is of most utility to a growing industry.

You'll be a great writer, and you’ll need to be super organised and good at managing deadlines, priorities and people.

Plus you’ll benefit from a positive, entrepreneurial attitude. You’ll be a gamer; an early adopter; you’ll enjoy getting the best out of people; you’ll be good at spotting creative and commercial opportunities wherever they arise.

Day To Day

Steel Media is a fast-paced, small company where decisions are made quickly. You need to manage multiple communications channels daily, via email, Skype and Google Docs and not be fazed by this. Due to working remotely, you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and report into your line-manager via Skype and online systems regularly.

Specific Requirements

  • At least 2 years’ editorial experience (games/tech industry)
  • Proven track record in editing a site
  • Valid EU passport, no special visa or travel restrictions
  • Very stable internet connection
  • Able to work home-based – ideally near to a major airport
  • Willingness to travel and represent the company at conferences sometimes

  • Salary dependent on experience (assuming 5 days, c.40 hours, per week). Our office hours are generally 9-6pm (with an hour for lunch), but we are open to flexible working hours, as long as activity levels are maintained.
  • We will pay reasonable expenses for travel (often booked centrally for flights, etc) and subsistence costs when travelling for the company
  • The role is offered on a contract basis, with an invoice at the end of each month. Our standard terms are 45 days, but we aim to pay within 30
  • Within an initial three-month probationary period we’d operate on the basis of 1 week’s notice either side, after which we’d move to 1 month’s notice
