Aprilia In MotoGP AR First

MotoGP bike racing factory team, Aprilia, used AR technology in the pits for the first time at this weekend’s San Marino round at the Misano World Circuit in Italy. 30 years on from the marque’s first victory in the 250 class at the very same track, Aprillia used AR to support mechanics as they prepared Aleix Espargaro and Sam Lowes' race bikes.

Using software developed by Realmore on the DAQRI Smart Helmet, mechanics were shown models of pinout connectors and the wiring capabilities by looking at each connector individually in real time. This feature involves speeding up the cable connection activity and virtually zeroing the risk of error by the mechanics.

Using DAQRI’s Thermal Camera, they could also scan the motorbike and receive information about the temperature of the oil and the water in the radiator and check for any anomalies on a 3D hologram of the entire racing bike. They also ran checklists of the wear on some parts of the bike, evaluating when to do replacements.

The Remote Expert mode even allowed the chief engineer to communicate remotely with the mechanics by displaying strategic information such as the type of tires to be mounted, the kilograms of petrol to be in the tank or the lap number on the helmet screen.

The system is the result of the Open Innovation project of BacktoWork24, Italy’s first program of private investment in small businesses to promote the development and visibility of innovative start-ups and SMEs.

With both riders crashing out at the rain-soaked round, we can only hope the technology fared better in the pits...
